International geosynthetics standards
Tom Sangster has been actively involved in the development of standards for geosynthetics over more than 30 years. With the support of clients, this has contributed to fair, unbiased and technically sound standards that create a clear framework for performance-led growth in geosynthetics markets. This activity continues in three key forums:
British Standards Committee B/553 – Geosynthetics. Tom Sangster represents the Institution of Civil Engineers, the UK’s premier engineering institution and the world’s oldest such body.
CEN European Standards Committee TC189 – Geosynthetics. Tom Sangster represents the UK in this committee and in several working groups.
ISO International Standards Organisation Committee TC221 – Geosynthetics. Tom Sangster represents the UK in this committee and in several working groups.
Our standards work includes introducing new standards proposals where these are necessary, drafting standards and guiding them through the sometimes tortuous process to publication and adoption. We also participate actively in the review, revision and update of standards to ensure that they remain relevant and usable and take account of new developments and advances in geosynthetics worldwide.
Our work also has a strong focus on:
- Optimisation of geosynthetics usage and benefits:
- Technical
- Economic
- Environmental & Sustainability
- Technical specifications: performance-based or prescriptive according to project conditions and contractual risk allocation.
- Risk analysis.
